The Marina is a concept study on how to design a structure with a utilitarian purpose, such as boat storage, and turn it into something beautiful. When we began developing our concept we looked for inspiration from land art. We found art peaces that were created from natural elements placed in water to emphasize the relationship reflection and form. We also found inspiration from pieces that appeared transparent or opaque as a result of the observers location. Using vertical lengths of corten steel, evenly spaced around a radius, we were able to create a screen that has varying levels of transparency as you move across it. Drawing the vertical form from the surrounding hills, we were able to create an aesthetic that is non obtrusive to the existing landscape, while providing a functional hub for outdoor recreation.
