Located at the corner of US highway 183 south and MLK Jr. Boulevard, this pocket park highlights key events in Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, including his movement to achieve equality for minorities in the United States. It also provides a respite for pedestrians and cyclists using a shared-use path along MLK Jr. Boulevard and US 183 south.
Utilizing a dense combination of Texas native trees and shrubs, the park design is able to create an intimate setting adjacent to a busy thoroughfare. The softness of the plant material, as well as the color of the hardscape patterning creates a stark contrast and calls attention to the steel panels in the center of the space that contains imagery and information on one of the most influential civil rights leaders in American history.
